Therapeutic Touch, (TT)
a contemporary interpretation of several ancient
healing practices, was developed in the early 70's by Dolores Krieger,
PhD, RN and Dora Kunz. It is an intentionally directed process
of energy exchange during which the practitioner’s hands are used to
facilitate the recipient’s own innate healing abilities.
TT is simple

Facilitator
Doris Milton, PhD, RN:
Doris has been a registered nurse for more than 40 years and has
practiced and taught TT for more than 35 years. She learned TT from
Dr. Dolores Krieger in the 1970s and was recognized as one of only
six honorary lifetime members of the Therapeutic Touch International
Teachers Cooperative, the group that approves Qualified Therapeutic
Touch Teachers. Dr. Doris Milton and Dr. Dolores Krieger have
declared no financial interest in this program.
Marsha Craven and
Mary Ellen Brown have declared no financial interest in this program

Nurse Planner &
Therapeutic Touch Instructor at Healing
Arts Connection
Dr. Milton was most recently Assistant
Dean, Graduate Program, School of Nursing, Kaplan University where she had
operations and curriculum development responsibility for its new MSN
program. Dr. Milton speaks at conferences, conducts workshops, and consults
with health care and educational organizations on various alternative\
complementary healing and professional development topics, including career
planning and research/evidence-based practice workshops. She has published
articles in professional journals, authored several book chapters, and edits
manuscripts for publication. Formerly associate editor of Alternative
Therapies in Health and Medicine, she is co-author with Samuel Benjamin,
MD of Complementary and Alternative Therapies: An Implementation Guide to
Integrative Healthcare, published by the American Hospital Association
Press and has a new edition of that manual in press. Dr. Milton also
authored a graduate-level e-text on developing nursing research
utilization/evidence-based project proposals for Apollo Press, the
publishing arm of the University of Phoenix.
Dr. Milton was the founding Director of
Research and Education at The Arizona Center for Health and Medicine which
integrated complementary and alternative healing therapies with conventional
primary health care. She was Director of Nursing Research, Samaritan Health
System, Phoenix for eleven years and later Director of Nursing Research and
Education at Scottsdale Healthcare where she was influential in that system
obtaining magnet status. She was a co-principal investigator on a six-year
demonstration/research project in four facilities in Arizona,
Differentiated Group Professional Practice in Nursing, jointly funded by
the National Institute for Nursing Research and the Division of Nursing,
examining effects of a professional practice model on nurse, quality, and
fiscal outcomes.
Dr. Milton, a registered nurse for more
than 40 years, practiced in critical care and medical-surgical areas in New
York, Maryland, and Arizona. She has an extensive teaching background in
formal university and continuing education. Dr. Milton served as Dean,
College of Health Sciences and Nursing, University of Phoenix, and has held
faculty positions at New York University, Cornell University-New York
Hospital School of Nursing, University of Maryland, University of Phoenix,
Grand Canyon University, and Arizona State University. She has taught
online and on ground baccalaureate and master’s -level courses on research
methods, evidence-based project proposal development, and nursing models and
theory development.
Dr. Milton is a member of Sigma Theta
Tau, the international nursing honorary society, and served on the board of
Nurse Healers - Professional Associates International Inc. Dr. Milton was
recognized as one of only six honorary lifetime members of the Therapeutic
Touch International Teachers Cooperative. She was a founding member of the
Arizona Cancer Pain Initiative and served as its co-chair and editor of its
newsletter. Dr. Milton has received awards for her teaching skills,
mentorship, and contributions to research utilization in practice.
Dr. Milton is a
graduate of St. Vincent’s Medical Center School of Nursing in Staten Island,
New York; she received a baccalaureate in nursing from Fairleigh Dickinson
University, and a master’s and doctorate in nursing from New York
University.
