Oncology Massage Foundation Program, 24 CE hours

Course Description:

The Oncology Massage Foundation is the first phase in learning about providing massage to people with cancer.

Topics covered will include the primary treatments for cancer of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy and the side effects from those treatments.

The student will learn the massage modifications needed to provide a safe and therapeutic massage based upon clinical data and critical thinking.

This nationally approved three-day course will also offer the student the opportunity to learn about the disease process of cancer, various types of cancer, and how to modify a massage for people with lymphedema or a risk of lymphedema.

During hands-on practice, the student will demonstrate proper positioning, and adjustments for pressure and site restriction based on information given in written and verbal intake.

On the third day students will have the opportunity to put into practice everything learned by providing oncology massage during two client clinics with cancer survivors.

Oncology Massage Foundation Objectives:

·       Students will be able to identify specific clinical data, and using critical thinking , will determine what massage modifications will be used in an oncology massage.

·       Students will demonstrate knowledge of lymphatic quadrants and the proper direction of strokes for compromised lymph nodes.

·       Students will demonstrate proficiency in providing an intake session, 60-minute oncology massage, and SOAP notes for cancer patients during the two Client Clinics on the third  day of class.

Enrollment Prerequisite: This course is open to licensed massage therapists, estheticians, body workers certified in other modalities and students enrolled in a massage or Asian bodywork program. (Students will have a minimum of 400 course hours and have completed a circulatory massage course)

 Lotion Requirement

For this class you will be required to use a hypoallergenic, unscented lotion. Oil is not a good choice because it tends to sit on top of dry skin and does not really soak in. Cream is also not a good choice because it might have too much “drag” on fragile skin. So, unscented, hypoallergenic lotion is our best choice.

These are some of the lotions that work well (recommend getting the 8 oz. bottle to start with).

Biotone Advanced Therapy Massage Lotion OR gel  Can be purchased online through: http://www.massagewarehouse.com

Soothing Touch Unscented jojoba Massage Lotion  Can be purchased online through: http://www.massagewarehouse.com   (available for purchase at Healing Arts Connection Boutique)

SacredEarth Botanicals® unscented massage lotion  Can be purchased online through: http://sacredearthbotanicals.com/lotion.html

We recommend getting an 8 oz. bottle to start with.  You will also need a lotion holster

Jacki Sellers, CMT, NCTMB, CMLDT

Jacki Sellers has been an educator for over 30 years, first in the field of music education and performance - including 13 years at Pima Community College ( Tucson , AZ ) - and now in the specialized discipline of oncology massage. Jacki has been working with cancer patients since 2008, and teaching oncology massage since 2012 as an Approved Educator for S4OM (Society for Oncology Massage) and NCBTMB (National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork). She is very proud to be Board Certified in massage, bodywork and Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

Because every therapist will encounter people who have been challenged with cancer, all massage therapists need oncology massage education. Jacki's goal is to see every spa and wellness center offer oncology massage by properly trained therapists.
