Ancient Healing Technique Being Embraced Today

BALTIMORE, Md. (WUSA) -- The University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit is embracing the ancient Japanese healing technique called Reiki. Reiki is used to help with pain management.

To watch Donna Aida, a nurse and Reiki specialist, is like watching part modern dance and part pantomime. Soft music is playing in the room. Darren Bailey, who is about to undergo his seventh surgery on his leg, lies in his hospital bed.

Aida uses her hands over Bailey's body. She almost never touches him. The feeling for Bailey is sort of like moving air right above your skin. One school of thought is that Reiki stimulates the body to help heal itself.

It's calming and peaceful says Bailey. "It takes me out of the hospital. It takes me to different places. It lets me deal with my pain in a different way."

"What we're seeing from Reiki is that the patients are much more relaxed, they find that they can sleep better and they need less pain medicine," says Dr. Brian Berman with the Integrative Medicine Department at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Hospitals Relax Pain Away In Shock Trauma Patients

(WJZ) MARYLAND Local hospitals move beyond medication to treat individuals with severe pain.

Patients at Shock Trauma are benefiting from a Japanese relaxation technique.

Healthwatch reporter Kellye Lynn reports doctors at Shock Trauma are turning to Reiki therapy to help traumatic injury patients better manage their pain.

A patient's room at Shock Trauma is transformed into a relaxing retreat.

"It's a technique that uses the hands and energy called chi to move energy in the body," said Bonnie Terantino from the Center For Integrative Medicine.

The goal is to reduce stress, anxiety and pain. Kim Holland wound up in Shock Trauma after a terrible motorcycle accident.

"I broke my femur and my ankle, and I dislocated my knee," said Holland.

Now she's seeking relief with Reiki. The goal is to increase the flow of life force energy.

"Due to that energy flow, your brain is able to produce those pain suppressing chemicals that give you that decrease in pain, calmness, sense of well being by being able to tap into that," said Dr. David Tarantino.

Doctors say although patients are never touched, when the treatment is over, there's a definite difference.

"They're much calmer, more open," said RN Donna Audia.

By going in and offering Reiki, it changes the entire situation.

Shock Trauma and the University Of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine is also offering acupuncture for pain management and conducting a study to learn more about the potential benefits.

Doctors say after Reiki patients often respond better to their pain medication.

Reiki Induces Relaxation, Liminal State of Awareness

Reiki reduces anxiety and blood pressure, and increases relaxation, according to recent research.
"Experience of a Reiki Session" was conducted by Joan Engebretson, R.N., Dr.Ph., and Diane Wind Wardell, R.N.C., Ph.D., certified holistic nurses and associate professors at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

The study involved 23 participants, ages 29 to 55, each of whom received a standardized reiki treatment in a soundproof, windowless, softly lit room. A single reiki master provided Reiki Touch, a form of the Usui Reiki System.

According the Usui System of Reiki Healing's Web site, "The Usui System of Reiki Healing is a hands-on healing practice. Reiki-universal life energy-is channeled through the practitioner's hands for self-treatment or treatment of others."

For this study, the practitioner's hands were lightly placed on the subject's face and abdomen for 15 minutes each.

Before and after each session, quantitative information was collected: Participants filled out questionnaires; salivary specimens were gathered; and biofeedback and blood-pressure data were recorded. "These were chosen as markers to explore a physiological relaxation response," state the study's authors.

The measurements all changed in the direction of relaxation. Participant anxiety and systolic blood pressure decreased significantly following the session, while skin temperature and salivary IgA levels rose after receiving reiki, which indicates a physiological relaxation response.

Interviews were conducted and recorded after each session by one of two investigators, who later transcribed and analyzed them for persistent patterns. Participants were asked to describe their experience and answer questions specific to the session. This falls into the category of qualitative data.

"Consistent with other touch studies, these recipients reported a holistic experience," state the study's authors. "Touch therapies appear to engage the recipient in an integrated experience that links body, mind and spirit in a unique manner that allows the recipient to experience paradox."

Subjects described a change in their state of awareness as liminal, or between two known states, such as sleeping and waking, floating and sinking, hot and cold, fear and safety.

"I knew my mind had thoughts, but didn't know what they were," said one participant. The word "threshold" was used by several subjects to describe the reiki experience as bordering on two different states of being.

"Liminal states of consciousness, by definition paradoxical, are frequently associated with profound religious experiences and have been linked to ritual healing practices across cultures," the authors reported.

Qualitative descriptions of the session as peaceful, soothing, quiet and gentle were consistent with the relaxation response indicated by the quantitative data.

However, besides this expected response, the authors of the study noted that the effects of reiki may be beyond the capacity of traditional research. "The narratives suggest that the experience of Reiki is dynamic and incorporates subtle fluctuations and variations; hence it may defy measurement."

Reiki

Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”) is a laying-on of hands natural healing technique thought to be thousands of years old.  Originating as a Tibetan Buddhist practice, it was rediscovered in the late 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist. It is very simple yet powerful healing art that can be used on your self as well as others and can easily be learned by anyone.  Practitioners channel universal life force in a particular pattern to bring forth healing and harmony.

The word Reiki is derived from two Japanese words - “rei,” meaning “Universal Spirit,” and “ki,“ meaning “life force energy.” The word Reiki, therefore, refers to a balanced cosmic and life force energy.  Because of its qualities of universal energy, it seems to have a basic consciousness which, when used for healing, is able to provide exactly what is needed on all levels. Reiki treatments work by dissolving or eliminating toxic energy and substances from many levels of ones being whether it be physical, emotional, mental or beyond. Reiki helps to create a harmonious environment within ones being so true healing can take place.

Anyone can use Reiki to strengthen well-being, and it can be especially useful for people with pain, anxiety, insomnia, depression, fatigue syndromes or other chronic illness, or those undergoing surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or treatment for addictions.

Reiki at Healing Arts Connection

Reiki at Healing Arts Connection is taught by Marsha Craven, LMT, RMT, CCHt,  a 5th generation Usui Master Teacher who teaches Usui Reiki as she was taught it by Beth Gray, who was taught by Mrs. Takata, who is responsible for bringing Reiki to the United States.

At the Reiki III/Master level, Marsha does bring in additional symbols commonly accredited to Sai Baba.

Marsha has her own unique teaching style and is very patient and down to earth with her students.  She consistently receives the highest of marks from those who are new to energy work as well as advanced practitioners and  teachers who take her classes.

All participants receive a comprehensive manual and a certificate at the completion of each level.

Reiki II — New information and sacred symbols are presented and practiced.  There is an emphasis on healing energy for the mental and emotional levels of one's being, often the true cause of dis-ease. The First degree energy is enhanced and amplified at least four times.

Reiki II builds on Reiki I as a safe, gentle healing practice that provides rapid stress reduction and a sense of well being to recipients.  Additional information, attunements and symbols are imparted.  Discussion includes using Reiki to support those experiencing pain, anxiety, insomnia, depression, fatigue syndromes or other chronic illness, or those undergoing surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or treatment for addictions.  Participants discover and practice long distance applications of Reiki.  Hands on practice provides more opportunities to build skills using Reiki as an integrative therapy.

 Reiki

Reiki brings people a tool to support body, mind, and spirit, regardless of health status.  Reiki is completely safe and complements traditional and  alternative healthcare practices to create an optimum healing environment.  Reiki can be done in person or from a distance and can be used with humans, animals and plants.

Anyone can learn Reiki and can begin using it immediately in a Reiki I seminar.  Additional symbols and practice, which make Reiki healing exponentially more powerful, are provided in Reiki II and Reiki III/Master.

Reiki can help people reduce pain, anxiety and depression and improve outcomes with other therapies that they are undergoing. For example, various experimental results show reduction in pain by newly trained HIV/AIDS patients providing a compelling argument for teaching Reiki to everyone who is diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.  Its efficacy with those experiencing chronic illness, cancer and other conditions is being revealed in additional studies being conducted around the world.

The value of Reiki comes from its ability to relieve suffering and promote healing regardless of the cause. Reiki is not limited in the way it is able to heal, and results are achieved even with illnesses and conditions that aren’t usually understood or helped with regular medical treatment.

Reiki is a complement to treatment by a physician. It does not provide services in lieu of a doctor, nor is it a medical diagnostic tool. We perceive that integrative medicine that takes advantage of all parts of the care spectrum as appropriate is much more effective (and cost-effective) than allopathic treatment alone.
